Nicolaas ClenardThis is the story of the Conquest of the Inca Empire under Francisco Pizarro and Diego de Almagro. A first exploring voyage occurred in 1524, a second in 1526 which eventually touched Peru in Paita and Chiclayo, and third set off in early 1530 after Pizarro had obtained the necessary credentials in Spain to conquer Peru. He left with 181 men and 37 horses eventually reaching Tumbes, Peru in May 1532. He founded present day Piura on the coast and went inland, met Atahualpa, the Inca emperor, in Cajamarca and had him killed after delivering a huge ransom in gold (July 1533). He then followed the Royal Road over the Andes as far South as Cusco where he was joined by Almagro who had arrived with reinforcements from Panama. They destroyed the Inca capital. In January 1535 Pizarro founded Lima, la ciudad de los Reyes. The 25 engravings, illustrating the story, are largely made after the ones Theodor de Bry had made in his book VI of the Grands Voyages, 1595. (after Howego P 108-111).

Añadir al carritoNo Binding. Condición: Fine. Three maps and full description in Dutch from Caert Tresoor, Middelburg, the Netherlands, 1598.Tibbetts 1978, map 54 The first map exclusively dedicated to Arabia is in the Ptolemy edition, in Rome of 1478. This is the Sexta Asiae tabula. The first modern depiction of Arabia is in Waldseemuller's Carta Marina of 1516 of which one copy only is known to exist. Further modern features are shown in Sebastian Munster's Geographia of 1540. The first printed modern map is Arabia Felix Nova Tabula by Gastaldi in 1548. That map was copied and enlarged by Ruscelli in 1561. The next innovations in the mapping of Arabia has its sources in the Portuguese, maritime cartography, based the exploration of the Asian waters and lands from Vasco da Gama 1498 onwards. When in the late XVI century the Dutch became dominant in printed maps and charts one of their pioneers, Petrus Plancius, obtained a fine set of Portuguese manuscript maps made by Lasso. They served as the basis for the map of the Indian Ocean as published in Linschoten's Itinerario of 1596. The map of Arabia, described here is a direct derative from that Linschoten map. Arabia The Langenes map closely follows (Lasso) van Linschoten. It is quite distinct from the Porro map of the same date. On our map the bays are shown in distinct detail and places are clearly indicated: the result of direct observation. The Tropic of Cancer cuts the map in a northern and Southern part, above it Ayaman and under it Arabia Foelix. Present day Yemen is called Zebit after its mayor harbor at the Red Sea. Just under 23 ½ degree is Consida al Ziden (Djedda) and Mecha (Mecca); above it Medina talnabi ubiMahumetis sepulchrum visitor. The utmost southern point is Aden.

DrakeThe first report is on the third circumnavigation ever, the one under Thomas Cavendish,1586-89 and the second (Knivet), failed circumnavigation by the same between 1591 and 1593. Thomas Cavendish was an exception among the discoverers. He was educated at Christ College in Cambridge.Sir Francis Drake, probably the best known English discoverer, found on his first (only the second ever) voyage around the world, 1577-1579, that Tierra del Fuego was an island, not part of a southern continent. Sailing North Drake made landings to attack the Spanish settlements and came as far North as Cabo Blanco. A bit further South Drake envisioned to found New Albion, in the San Francisco area at 38 degrees N. Once back in England the results were kept secret. The first full publication of the voyage occurred in 1628 titled The world encompassed. The second and third voyage reported on here were to the Caribbean and involved many confrontations with the Spanish settlers there.William Keeling was a British naval commander who undertook various voyages to the East Indies from 1604 onward and ended 1614-1616 as commander of the British fleet in the east.

Modern half calfTwo books in one volumeSpilbergen: pp 3-62, six woodcut plates in the textL' Hermite: pp 3-60, ten woodcuts and seven copper plate engravings in the text.Lacking the two title pages.Spilbergen's was the fifth circumnavigation ever after Magellan; Drake; Cavendish and van Noort. The voyage took place between 1614 and 1618. Spilbergen was an accomplished admiral who had sailed for the VOC to the Indies (Ceylon) before. He was sent again by the VOC to discover new territories, chart the Magellan's Straits and damage Spanish interests in South America and the Philippines where possible. He landed in Brazil, mapped Magellan's Strait, fought Spanish settlements in Chile, Peru and Mexico and sailed to the Philippines. Once in Batavia he picked up le Maire and the rest of his crew who had been arrested in Batavia for breaching VOC laws by sailing to the Indies without VOC consent. Le Maire denied this as he did not sail through Magellan's Straits (as specified in the VOC laws) but around Cape Horn!! The Schouten version of his voyage with le Maire is no part of our volumes. Instead the voyage around the world by l' Hermite is added, apparently to unite Dutch circumnavigations.Jacques l'' Hermite was sent out to attack the Spanish possessions and frustrate the Spanish dominance in the Pacific, considered by Spain a Spanish lake. Spain and the Netherlands had just finished a 12 years truce (1609-1621) in a war of independence that took 80 years (1568-1648). L'Hermite sailed in May 1623 and returned in January 1626.In 1625 two letters were published in Holland, translated from Spanish, that recount the information of the first parts of l' Hermite's voyage given by a Dutch sailor, taken prisoner of war in Lima. The first full publication was by Gerritszoon and Wachter in Amsterdam in 1626. That book had 9 plates. A second edition of that book forms part one of another publication by Wachter in 1643. In 1646 a third edition is included in the Commelin series of Dutch voyages. In this 1646 edition a description of Peru is added plus a letter by de Quiros. Ours, the fourth edition is complete in itself, missing the 1646 description of Peru (pp 61-70) and Keyes description of Guyana. So the book we offer here contains the full text and all the plates of the fifth circumnavigation of the world (Spilbergen) and the sixth circumnavigation of the world (l' Hermite) missing only the two title pages.

It was also the first foreign intrusion into the dominance of Portugal in SE Asia. The voyage was harsh and difficult: only one ship of the four that sailed, returned safely home after two years, the original fleet having lost 80 percent of its crew. Two different journals of this voyage were published by Langenes in Middelburg in 1597 and 1598, the first under the title Verhael van and the second as the Journaal van. The text of the Verhael is the text that was used by John Woolfe in London for his English edition of the journal in 1598 and by Hulsius to publish his German version in Frankfurt, also in 1598 and by Conrad Loew in Cologne in the same year. The text of the first Amsterdam edition has a different source. It is mainly drawn from the original journal by Willem Lodewijkszoon (Tiele Memoire 111) and another journal of the same voyage by Frank van der Does. It covers the whole voyage. The many inserts (descriptions of cities, countries, notes etc) have various, later sources. The book was printed in Dutch, French and Latin in its first year of printing, 1598. It was re-edited for the Colijn edition in 1617 and again for the Commelin edition of 1646. Ours then, the Hartgens edition would be the fourth re-edition, though the plates, text engraving on copper plate, are completely new.Second edition (first 1648) of Joost Hartgen's pocket edition of the original oblong edition by Claeszoon.BibliographyRouffaer, GP and IJzerman J.W: De eerste schipvaart van de Nederlanders naar Oost Indie, den Haag, Martinus Nijhoff. 1925.

These were unique drawings, not prints. The oldest manuscript images that I am aware of are in a 1636 album by Antonio de Mariz Carneiro. I add an image where you can see the development over time in building fortifications at strategic points on the peninsula. De Bry in his Petits Voyages, publishes an engraved view of the city, a nice and convincing bird's eye view. There are (at least) two states of this first edition of the first printed view of Macao. The first state of the print is published in the German edition of this de Bry volume, published in 1606. The second, ours in the Latin edition in 1607. The differences are marginal. It is so rare that Shirley mentions the map but has not seen one and no image in his standard reference work. One could still think the failure to show Italy, or the land connection of Japan are due the small scale of the map. The open sea at the South Pole however, is on purpose and quite unusual for the time.

Añadir al carritoNicolaus Henricum, Munchen 1604(Shirley, 245)Copperplate engravingc. 6x12 cmB/WTitle page of Mayr' s Epitome CronicorumThe small double hemisphere worldmap is worth studying. It is a copper plate engraving. The prime Meridian is at Tenerife. Both hemispheres are split in quarters by a broad band as meridian and equator which leads to a deformation of the continents. Both Poles consist of land and further North (and South) there is sea again. The map suggests both poles are actually water surrounded by land and ice. The southern Pole, around und under the Circulus Antarcti, comes twice further North than the Tropic of Capricorn, once under N. Guina (sic) and once under Java. The land mass is called Terra Incogni(tum). Other names are Fuego (under the Americas); Psitaco(rum) region under Africa) and Beach, Lecath (Lucach) and Maletur (under Java). Japan is connected to ChinaIn the Americas we note: Anian; Hisp(ania) nova; Peru; Chile; Chica, R.(io) de la Plata; Brasil; plata, the metal; Caribana; MOR (=¿ Mexico?), Florida and No(va) Fran(cia)In Africa: Barbaria; Cabo bon speitexa (Speranza); Quituo; Aegypt(o).In Europa: Hispan(ia) and RussiaIn Asia: Arabia; persia; goa; Mogor; India; Mala(ca); Japon; cataio and TartariaThe map seems to be of Italian design (stippled Oceans, spelling of the names; fine lettering, but Italy is NOT shown on the map. It is so rare that Shirley mentions the map but has not seen one and no image in his standard reference work. One could still think the failure to show Italy, or the land connection of Japan are due the small scale of the map. The open sea at the South Pole however, is on purpose and quite unusual for the time.
